Editorial Reviews

This acclaimed 2006 adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's sweeping romantic novel features Ruth Wilson as the titular heroine and Toby Stephens as her romantic interest, Edward Fairfax Rochester. Originally aired on PBS's Masterpiece Theatre in January 2007, the BBC-WGBH Boston co-production runs nearly four hours, affording an even richer interpretation of the text than the landmark 1944 film version featuring Joan Fontaine and Orson Welles. It remains, of course, the story of a young orphan girl who eventually finds true love and happiness as an adult. The Chronicles of Narnia's Georgie Henley stars as young Jane, who is orphaned and placed in the care of her cruel aunt. Ridiculed and hated by her family, she is sent to live at a school for girls, where she blossoms despite her dreary surroundings. Eventually, Jane (Wilson) rises to the position of teacher and finds work at Rochester's manor, tutoring his daughter. Taciturn and sullen, Rochester nevertheless grows attached to Jane and begins opening up to her. Jane is likewise attracted to the handsome master of the house and dreams of marrying him. But life -- and love -- in 19th-century England is always fraught with difficulties, and in Jane's case that involves a mysterious brother-in-law, a long-lost cousin, a dead uncle's fortune, and separation from Rochester. To the film's considerable credit, the inevitable romantic outcome is handled with passion and style. Barnes & Noble

Like this more than the movie.by Anonymous

October 25, 2009: I remember seeing a scene of this on TV (can't remember which one to be honest) and then later the movie. I finished watching this one and must say that I like this better than the movie. The directing, the actors, the settings is great. Especially Ruth as Jane who reminded me so much of Liv Tyler and Anna Paquin (who was in the movie as the young Jane). In this of course its the story of Jane when she was young being sent to a school after being mistreated by her aunt and cousins then later as an adult now a governess and meeting Mr. Rochester. Toby as Rochester surprised for me some reason but at the same time he was just great playing the character. I noticed some scenes that were in the film and others that were not or well just played out differently. At times it felt like a horror movie, especially the beginning and of course the "red room." I like the story and the characters and by seeing this and the movie makes me want to read the book even more. That's how much I like this version and if I were to see this again. I would. Honestly recommend this and the movie even if you read the book or not.

July 06, 2009: This is my absolute favorite Jane Eyre film. The casting is perfect (Toby Stephens lends just the right amount of sexiness and intrigue to Mr. Rochester and Ruth Wilson is perfect as meek but still spunky Jane) and the script remains loyal to the book. Definitely a must see!
