Editorial Reviews

Filled with enough cameos to keep film buffs entertained, this otherwise routine action-comedy by John Landis boasts Michelle Pfeiffer as one of its major attractions. She plays Diana, a woman prone to having affairs with some very dangerous men, and Jeff Goldblum is Ed Okin, an aerospace engineer whose lot is thrown in with Diana's when the woman is caught in a bind at the airport. The beautiful Diana is an airhead on the scale of the Hindenberg, her only concerns are clothes and men -- which she either most attractively wears or wears out, depending. While Ed is at the airport one day trying to sort out his life, Diana arrives with six smuggled emeralds in tow and is immediately welcomed by several hired assassins. Fear and expediency propel her into Ed's car, and the two are off on a series of narrow escapes that has them pursued by everyone from Iranians to baddies played by well-known international directors (Roger Vadim) or singers (David Bowie) or comedians (Dan Aykroyd). February 28, 2006: Understatement, overstatement, originality and cliche. Jeff Goldblum plays Ed Okin so cool you wonder if he's alive at all. But that's the point. He's an insomniac who sleepwalks through his boring life until he gets dragged off "into the night" by trouble personified. Pfifer as Diana is a blonde's blonde, not to be trusted or understood and never to be believed, especially when she is telling the truth. The comic moments usually involve gunfire or knifeplay. You wind up worrying more about Ed finally getting some sleep than you do about whether the two of them get caught. Some of the situations are dated, but you'll get all of the references if you are over thirty. Behind it all is a wonderful B.B. King soundtrack setting the tone for each scene. Small parts by lots of well-known actors help to make you feel like you've really gotten you money's worth. Richard Farnsworth, Vera Miles, David Bowie, and several others keep popping up at odd times. And who is that losing a bundle in the backroom casino?

December 20, 2003: Jean Pelton -- the epitomy of a Bimbo -- should certainly expect big things in her future acting career. Enticing Peter Horton from Michelle Pfiffer the most noteworthy. Look who got the last laugh on that one. Peter Horton is peddling electronic cars and Michelle Pffifer (a true star in her own right) is married to the talented David E. Kelly.
