Editorial Reviews

Uwe Boll's fantasy adventure film In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale stars Jason Statham as Farmer, a simple man from the Kingdom of Ehb whose goal as the story begins is to care for his family. However, when the power-hungry Gallian (Ray Liotta) invades the kingdom, Farmer must abandon his simple existence in order to rescue his wife (Claire Forlani) and save his king (Burt Reynolds). This film is a cinematic adaptation of the video game Dungeon Siege. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide All Movie Guide

Ewe Boll One of Filmdom's WORST DIRECTORS EVERby Bob_the_Director

January 24, 2009: Boll's uneven, poorly shot, incredibly badly directed, dragging mess can't be saved by it's struggling cast. The directing is at best disorganized, uninspired and shot angle selection is poor. Too much exposition throughout that is unnecessary and other things left out that could have driven the story more. There is some decent acting at times, and the costumes aren't bad. Most of the cast does the best they can with what they have to work with. Some of the lines are fun, but most are hackneyed and inconsistant in tone and feel. This must be Ray Liotta's worst acting effort ever, but you get the feeling that it's his direction from Bolle and weakness with Blue-Screen acting that are his biggest problems. Matthew Lillard isn't sure wether he's doing a comedy or a drama through most of the movie, which I attribute to Bolle's bad directing. The "special effects" aren't. With some re-writes and a capable Director this film could have been a good one. Overall the film is mostly painful or boring to watch. Bolle should be sweeping a backlot somewhere to better utilize his skills.

April 22, 2008: The problem with In the Name of the King - Pointless Video Game Movie Adaptation is not its actors - some of whom are quite good in their own rights. It's not the source material - Dunegon Siege, while no sprawling epic, is well known among video game fans. The problem, like with the movies Blood Rayne and Alone In The Dark, is the director, Uwe Boll. Mr. Boll is a charlatan at best, a money-grubbing scam artist posing as a film director at worst. He kicks out these mindless action films using tax loopholes to fund them, then banks on a big opening weekend to make up the rest before critics and filmgoers alike realize that he's made another stinker. Don't encourage Uwe Boll. Don't buy this movie. Don't even rent this movie. And, for the love of cinema, don't pay to see anything he makes in the theater.
