It is an inconvenient truth in Ice Age 2: The Meltdown that the glaciers are melting and a flood is imminent. Manny the wooly mammoth, Diego the saber-toothed tiger, and Sid the sloth embark on a perilous trek toward an ark-like refuge at the end of the valley. Each member in this unlikely trio has a personal issue to sort out: Manny (Ray Romano) despairs of perhaps being the last of his kind; Diego (Denis Leary) can't swim; and the hapless; hyper-verbal Sid (John Leguizamo) bemoans the lack of respect he is accorded. Imagine his delight at being mistaken for a fire god by creatures who worshipfully imitate his every move in one of this film's funniest scenes. Joining the not-so-merry menagerie is Ellie (Queen Latifah), a wooly mammoth who believes she is a possum and comes complete with two mischievous "brothers." Their journey is further imperiled by two freshly thawed shark-like sea monsters and ever-watchful vultures, whose theme song is "Food, Glorious, Food" from Oliver. It seems like an ice age has passed since the original film, but this sequel is just as breathtakingly animated, fast-paced, and riotously funny. The best news is that Scrat, the acorn-clutching squirrel, is back in an expanded role, providing breaks in the story (however thin that ice may be). One of the top ten films of 2006, Meltdown will be greeted warmly on DVD. It contains some cool extras, such as "No Time for Nuts," a very funny time-travel cartoon featuring Scrat.
