Editorial Reviews

Academy Award-winning director Hugh Hudson (Chariots of Fire) explores primitive landscapes and dark nights of the soul in this exquisitely rendered film. Based on Kuki Gallmann's autobiography, it is the story of a woman's transcendence and salvation as she moves from the material world of her young adulthood in Italy toward a difficult but more rewarding existence in the heart of Africa. Kim Basinger is effectively understated as Gallmann, a character beset by horrendous tragedies culminating in the deaths of her husband and a son. She manages to breathe emotional truth into Galmann's central dilemma: should she accept the comfort and security of her life in Europe, with its implied spiritual death, or embrace rural Africa's invigorating chaos. Vincent Perez and Eva Marie Saint, as Gallmann's husband and mother, also give strong, compelling performances. Like Out of Africa, I Dream of Africa captures, in both story and image, the complicated allure of a still-mysterious continent. Virginia McCollam, Barnes & Noble

November 13, 2003: A heart warming, emotional movie. I love movies based on true life stories. I watch it every time it comes on HBO. I decided to see if I could see if the movie was available for purchase, and it is. If you have a chance to see this movie, Do..you won't regret it.

August 16, 2000: I purchased Kuki Gallmann's book while on safari in Kenya in 1992. It is a well-written book of deep passion for this magnificant continent amid her personal tragedies. To turn this book into a movie would take extraordinary vision and application of the elements. Kim Basinger did a wonderful job portraying a woman compelled to rise above her tragedies. Today, Kuki Gallmann fights for the survial of the animal population on her ranch and I quite envy her!! I would do so myself if in the same circumstances. A beautifully portrayed movie for a land of contrasting beauty beyond description. A woman of strength, boundless determination and to carry on through it all makes this worth five stars.
