Editorial Reviews

Spanning 50 years, director John Ford's How Green Was My Valley revolves around the life of the Morgans, a Welsh mining family, as told through the eyes of its youngest child Huw (Roddy McDowall). Over the years, the family struggles to survive through unionization, strikes, and child abuse. As they do so, their hometown and its culture begins to slowly decline. Donald Crisp portrays Gwilym, the patriarch of the Morgan household, who dreams of a better life for young Huw. Based on the novel of the same name by Richard Llewellyn, How Green Was My Valley won five Academy Awards in 1941, including Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Crisp), Best Art Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Picture (beating Citizen Kane). The book was later adapted into a 1975 BBC miniseries. Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

August 11, 2009: How Green Was My Valley tells the story of the Morgans, a family living in a small Welsh mining village in the 1930s. Father Gwilym (Donald Crisp) and his older sons work in the coal mines, as do nearly all the men of the village. Younger son Huw (Roddy McDowall) dreams of books and school and a life outside the coal mines, a dream his family shares for him. Daughter Anharad dreams of a life and a family with the man she loves, not a coal miner, but the local minister (Walter Pidgeon). While the minister shares Anharad's love, he is torn between his devotion to his congregation and his devotion to her. Through the years, the Morgans experience changing fortunes, from bright happy days to dark and dreary ones and back again. Through it all, their hopes, dreams, and love for family and friends sustain them.

The scenery is intensely moving, and the soundtrack includes the hauntingly beautiful strains of Welsh voices, lifted in melodies of faith and strength, as only the Welsh can sing. Roddy McDowall never looked sweeter and more innocent, and Maureen O'Hara never looked lovelier. This is a classic film, a story that will haunt and inspire, a winner of 5 Academy Awards, and definitely "an essential" for the fan of Classic Hollywood!

March 09, 2009: I knew before I purchased this movie as a gift to a friend, how good it was, but he had never seen it, and his review is that "it's an excellant movie". He liked the cast and the story line. He also thought it is so refreshing in this day and age to see the movies that are clean, and have lessons to be learned. I knew he would love it as I did. Great movie.
