Editorial Reviews

Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) is not your average TV doctor. Though he's unquestionably brilliant, his bedside manner lies somewhere between indifference and disdain. He would prefer not to talk to his patients at all, actually, because while "First, do no harm" are words that most doctors live by, House believes in another edict: "All patients lie." They lie about how bad they actually feel, they lie about where they were when they first felt sick, they lie about their own bad habits. House would rather the symptoms to speak for themselves. His gruff demeanor stems, in part, from the constant pain he endures from a misdiagnosed embolism in his leg that has left him with a limp and an addiction to painkillers. Working at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, where he has cushy tenure, House only takes on cases that interest him -- and even then he does so begrudgingly. Helping him is his team of talented young specialists: Dr. Eric Foreman (Omar Epps), a neurologist with a troubled past; Dr. Robert Chase (Jesse Spencer), an Australian who seems to constantly be ducking his privileged upbringing; and immunologist Dr. Allison Cameron (Jennifer Morrison) who sparks with the emotionally distant House. Robert Sean Leonard plays oncologist James Wilson, seemingly House's only friend, and Lisa Edelstein is department head Dr. Cuddy, whose verbal sparring with House is one of the show's consistent highlights. As fascinating as each week's baffling case is, this FOX show's appeal rests entirely on Laurie's mesmerizing lead performance. The biting humor and humanity he brings to this hard-to-like character made this a late-blooming hit for FOX in 2005 and garnered Laurie a well-deserved Emmy nomination -- and they make this set of House's debut season as mandatory as doctor's orders.
