A newly single father discovers his daughter is caught up in a web of evil in this thriller. David Callaway (Robert De Niro) has been left to raise his nine-year-old daughter, Emily (Dakota Fanning), on his own after the unexpected death of his wife. David is at first amused to discover that Emily has created an imaginary friend named "Charlie," but it isn't long before "Charlie" develops a sinister and violent side, and as David struggles with his daughter's growing emotional problems, he comes to the frightening realization that "Charlie" isn't just a figment of Emily's imagination. Hide and Seek also stars Famke Janssen, Dylan Baker, and Amy Irving. Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

April 29, 2008: I think the movie is a pyschological thriller that was confusing and I had to watch it on DVD twice to get it.The movie's song called Emily's theme was fitting. She is traumatized by her mother's death,so she is revealing what she's feeling inside without the emotions one expects from a grieving person:her mother was Emily's playmate, her father was the evil Charlie because he is too disconnected from his family, the neighbors were weird, saying how pretty Emily is when we know she's creepy-looking(because that's how Emily wishes people to see her),Emily's father's supposedly divorced girlfriend(maybe Emily is threatened by her replacing her mother so she sets the scene in her head that "Charlie" will kill her),Emily's refusal to play with a girl her own age(that's a bit of maturity for a 9 year old & not wanting to play with toys anymore),& Katherine(maybe Emily's new mother?)rescuing Emily from her deranged father/Charlie.In the end,Emily is seeing herself as 2-faced in her picture.Emily sets her characters in motion. This is her game of "Hide & Seek", however deadly. In her mind,Emily blames her father for her mother's death so she sees her father as the bad guy(perhaps the guy that her mother was having an affair & Emily knew about that). That is why she rarely shows emotions because all of this is not really happening. She is zoned into her own world, playing.I know the director wants to portray her as innocent, but I believe she is far from innocent. There is definitely something wrong with Emily, perhaps disturbing. As the movie suggest, trauma causes pain. She wants everyone to feel her pain her way. It's just too bad that the movie wasn't clear. However, nice effort.
