The Parent Trap and Freaky Friday were career-revving star vehicles for Lindsay Lohan. But in her third Disney remake, it is the vehicle that is the star, and Lohan, as well as costars Michael Keaton and Matt Dillon, take a backseat. Twenty-five years after Herbie’s last theatrical film, the Volkswagen with a mind of his own is back on track, tricked out with more fine-tuned special effects than were available on the original 1969 model. Herbie: Fully Loaded is Formula 101 filmmaking, redeemed by a high-octane cast. Lohan stars as Maggie, who wants to follow in her former racing champion father’s footsteps. Keaton costars as her widowed father, who prefers to leave the driving to his son (Breckin Meyer). But after unwittingly rescuing “Number 53” from a junkyard, Maggie gets the chance to prove herself behind the wheel. Herbie takes Maggie for the ride of her life, as they challenge and defeat nasty and conceited rival Trip Murphy (Dillon). Maggie continues to race incognito without her father’s knowledge. Some things never go out of style, and one of them is the hilarious sight of an anthropomorphic Volkswagen performing extreme stunts. And Lohan is, as ever, in the driver’s seat, which stands to reason: If all those tabloid reports are true, she knows a little something about life in the fast lane. Donald Liebenson, Barnes & Noble
