Once upon a meow (1987, to be exact), Hello Kitty took center stage with her own animated series, Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater. Hello Kitty and her stock company, which includes a penguin, a seal, a bulldog, and Catnip (a feline Eve Harrington always scheming against Hello Kitty), reenact familiar fairy tales with an empowering uplift. In "Cinderkitty," for example, Hello Kitty doesn't want to be a cheerleader. She wants to be wide receiver and play in the big game. The other stories have been given age-appropriate tweaks ("Snow White Kitty" sniffs sleep-inducing flowers instead of biting into a poisoned apple) and a contemporary spin (in "Kitty Locks," the Three Bears skip the porridge and order out for pizza). This is not, as one character complains, "sissy stuff." It is creative fun that might encourage Hello Kitty fans to put on their own imaginative plays. Donald Liebenson, Barnes & Noble
