Editorial Reviews

The two-hour pilot for the marathon TV cop series Hawaii Five-O was unveiled on September 20, 1968; the series itself premiered the following week. In the opener, Honolulu special officer Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord) investigates the death of a close friend. Purportedly an accident, the death was arranged by Red Chinese master spy Wo Fat (Khigh Diegh). Captured by his communist foe, McGarrett is subjected to a brainwashing session straight out of The Perils of Pauline. In the pilot, McGarrett's assistant Danny ("Book him, Danno") was played by Tim O'Kelly, while the governor of Hawaii was portrayed by Lew Ayres; in the series proper, O'Kelly and Ayres were replaced, respectively, by James MacArthur and Richard Denning. February 16, 2009: Back in "68" I was 12 years old. I thought that Jack Lord was the most handsome actor on TV. He's still handsome even though this lady is alot older now. The episodes are as well written and engaging as they were long ago. Add this to your collection, sit back with a warm drink, a good companion and make a night of it. You won't be sorry.

May 08, 2007: I remember watching the series as a kid, and thinking that McGarrett was the epitome of a tough guy cop. I wasn't sure how the series would look almost 40 years later, but the quality of the writing and cinematography of the series still holds up very well. A must see if you are a fan of classic police drama. Che Fong rules........Gil Grissom drools
