Editorial Reviews

A pair of naïve young girls learn that even the most insignificant actions can have lasting consequences in this music-driven take on teen culture starring Anne Hathaway and Bijou Phillips and directed by two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Barbara Kopple. Influenced by the hip-hop thug lifestyle and seeking to explore life outside of their insulated, culturally homogenized suburb, pretty young teenagers Allison (Hathaway) and Emily (Phillips) set their sights on East L.A. to experience the "gangsta" lifestyle firsthand. By the time the pair meet some true-life Latino gang-bangers and realize just how far out of their element they really are, it may already be too late to turn back. Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

September 09, 2006: If one disregards some of the sex scenes with Hathaway, and excluding Phillips, this is typical teen fooder for racial conflict in HELL A. Hathaway's departure from the pollyanna films of Princess Diaries to the dire realities of the streets is exemplary, but in reality, is not reality. How many white girls would go into a mostly Hispanic ghetto looking for the "gangsta life" just because "they are teenagers and bored." I am sorry, but that's pathetic. Although not condoning what happened to the character of Emily in the movie, Bijou Phillips plays her usual character: a drug taking, stupid, naive, promisicuous, and ultimately criminal young temptress. Hathaway's portrayal does a compelling job, though, for how bad the script and the character were written. It shows where our alienated youth are going and how their apathetical parents don't know the other side. There is not much to this movie besides a kid that is filming a "documentary on phenomena," pacifica palaside spoiled brats, and middle-class white gang bangers trying to fight well entrenched Hispanics after a brutal gang rape of Emily (Phillips. You get the picture.

July 27, 2006: This movie was the one of those movies that you had to look at every scene to really get into. I mean the first 10 minutes is just shameless sex. It's really an introduction of their life style and how they tried to be all "gansta". However, I still don't see what the real purpose of this movie was. Okay, 2 girls from the upper side of L.A. ride to the downtown east side ( the quote unquote ghetto) to join a gang? What the hell? I mean ok I know it's just a movie but some of it seems really over the top. Teenagers don't act like this, at least the ones that I know. So the primous of this movie (if you get anything from it) is that pretty girls shouldn't go to the ghetto. Yeah, that was a lessioned learned. If you like seeing random teenage girls have sex this movie is very much for you.
