    The difficult realities of life in Britain during the early Industrial Age are explored in this made-for-television adaptation of the novel by Charles Dickens. Thomas Gradgrind (Bob Peck) is a schoolteacher working in Coketown, a grim industrial town in the North of England, who believes that facts are of supreme importance and imagination is folly. Gradgrind imposes his philosophies on his children, arranging for his daughter, Louisa (Beatie Edney), to marry Josiah Bounderby (Alan Bates), a businessman old enough to be her father, who also employs her brother, Tom (Christien Anholt). As Louisa tries to find a way out of her relationship with Bounderby, she finds herself pursued by the even more repellant James Harthouse (Richard E. Grant). Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

    March 26, 2006: I love watching BBC productions of all the literary classics. However, this particular movie is now my number one least favorite of all the ones I have seen. I was very disappointed in the acting and overall production of this film. Extremely disappointing. Do not waste your time or money to see this! Skip it and watch Our Mutal Friend!

    January 17, 2006: I watched this movie to discern whether or not it would be useful for a book discussion on Hard Times. I found it generally faithful to the story, but lacking. The horrors of the polluted factory town as well as the impoverishment and dehumanization of the workers wasn't really shown. It also seemed poorly cast in places, with acting that was awkward. They did a terrific job casting Louisa, though, and Hard Times is not the most "cinematic" of Dickens' novels, since it is far more satirical and thematic and the characters do sometimes fade into the background of his social criticism.
