Is Ruby Weaver's Mr. Right really an emissary from the year 2,470, or is he just a complete loon ball? This question is at the heart of Brad Anderson's whimsical romantic comedy Happy Accidents. The story opens with Ruby (Marisa Tomei) lamenting over her boyfriend Sam (Vincent D'Onofrio) to her shrink (Holland Taylor). In a series of flashbacks, the film quickly sketches Ruby as a neurotic with an unhappy track record concerning men and Sam as an oddball who is afraid of small dogs and has a barcode tattooed to his arm. But he's nuts over Ruby, and at least initially, that is enough for her. Slowly, Sam begins to reveal his "past." He tells her that he is from the Dubuque of the future and that he hails from a rare "anachronistic" family who believe that reproduction should occur the old-fashioned, fun way as opposed to the more popular cloning method. At first, Ruby is amused, until she realizes that he's not kidding. After a series of arguments, he agrees to visit Ruby's analyst, which yields unexpected results. This film premiered at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival. Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

April 18, 2003: If one wants to watch a mentally invigorating movie, this is it. You may need to watch it several times to get the gist of the wild fast running maze journey. With its fine job of realness showing of raw human emotions, it's refreshing to see realistic portrayal of lovers.

March 17, 2003: I came across this movie by accident, and I coulden't have been happier. I was passing through the sci-fi section of the local video store, on my way to the comedy section, when this movie caught my eye. I normally woulden't even think about renting a science fiction movie, but when I saw that Marisa Tomei and Vincent D'Onofrio (the fabulous, handsom actor from Law and Order: Criminal Intent) were in it I picked it up. The synopsis said that it was supposed to be romantic and a comedy to boot, so I rented it. This has to be one of the best movies I have recently seen. Marisa Tomei is at her finest (but isn't she always?) as a neurotic woman who dates strange sorts of men and runs straight to her therapist with any problems in relationships, and I was so pleased to see Vincent D'Onofrio in a comedic role, which is quite a change from what he plays in Law & Order. The sparks flew and these actors portrayed their characters perfectly. At heart, Happy Accidents is simply a quirky, modern love story.
