Editorial Reviews

Everybody loves Godzilla, the irradiated giant monster that first terrorized, then defended Japan throughout the Cold War and beyond. The first official Western entry to the series, Godzilla, King of the Monsters, was recut from Inoshiro Honda's original blockbuster Gojira. Interspersing English-language scenes starring Raymond Burr as an American reporter, the film follows a dinosaur -- resurrected by underwater nuclear testing -- as it emerges from the sea to flatten Tokyo. The result is a massively entertaining peek at postwar nuclear paranoia. As a living, fire-breathing embodiment of the A-bomb, Godzilla inflicts random acts of carnage and radioactive destruction on the populace. The metaphor extends to Burr's detached Americanism and to the ironic use of another doomsday weapon to destroy a monster created as a nuclear side effect in the first place. The menacing Godzilla is ultimately just a guy in a rubber suit stomping on models while actors speak in laughably dubbed dialogue, but that's the fun part. If you know only the recent American version, you owe it to yourself to check out the real thing. Amy Robinson, Barnes & Noble

January 19, 2009: In 1954 Ishiro Honda made what would come to be known as one of the best movies of the 20th century. Well if it's not, it should be. However, it took 50 years for it to cross the Pacific. During that time, we all had to suffer through the drudgery that was Godzilla: King of the Monsters with Raymond Burr. Now, don't get me wrong. Raymond Burr is a great actor, but even the greatest of actors is allowed one mistake. Disc 1 of this DVD has the original Japanese classic, and disc 2 has the Americanized version. I definitely suggest that you get this DVD. Now, don't sit there and say "I'll rent it" or "I'll get it from Netflix", you should own it. You'll be glad you bought it.

For its time this is a GREAT MOVIE! WELL DONE! (Japan ver.)by Jay_Godzilla_fan

October 17, 2008: Ok so the English us version was not that bad. I mean if you never say the real version you?d be like? ?Oh this is not so bad? but when you have the story behind the whole movie was lost; there was no music or theme in the US version either. If you haven?t seen the Japanese version yet and like Godzilla or monster movies you should get this. A MUST! It comes with a book to talking about how they tried making Godzilla like king Kong the clay animation stuff but was short on time so that?s why they went with a rubber suit. Cool special features too about the actors in the suites, movie posters and such. Very good buy. (or get it in the set on what "I also recommend" bellow.

I Also Recommend: King Kong vs. Godzilla / King Kong Escapes, King Kong Collection, The Godzilla Collection, The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms.
