Editorial Reviews

The WB's Gilmore Girls -- a wonderfully quirky and well-written series about the relationship between a single mom and her bookish teenage daughter -- came into its second season (2001-2) on a high. Having earned critics’ adulation, awards, and a growing audience, series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino kept the show’s momentum moving forward, delivering romantic entanglements in every imaginable form, along with some of the most realistic, emotionally charged arguments in TV history. After a yearlong courtship, Lorelai (Lauren Graham) agrees to marry Rory's (Alexis Bledel) teacher, Max (Scott Cohen), but changes her mind days before the wedding, sparking an impromptu road trip with Rory to visit Harvard. Upon their return to Stars Hollow, the Gilmores find that gruff diner owner Luke (Scott Patterson) has taken in his brooding, trouble-prone nephew, Jess (Milo Ventimiglia). The entire town hates the kid, but Rory takes a shine to him, to the dismay of her "perfect" boyfriend, Dean (Jared Padalecki). This season-long love triangle comes to a head in "Teach Me Tonight," involving tutoring, a car accident, and the Stars Hollow film festival. The festival’s highlight -- a David Lynch-inspired short film from kooky, jack-of-all-trades Kirk (Sean Gunn) -- is included here among the DVD’s extras. Meanwhile, Rory's father, Christopher (David Sutcliffe), reenters Lorelai's world, and the chance of a rekindled relationship excites nearly everyone, especially her snooty parents, Emily and Richard (Kelly Bishop and Edward Herrmann). Lorelai’s buddy, Independence Inn chef Sookie (Melissa McCarthy), gets engaged to her vegetable provider, Jackson (Jackson Douglas), and their wedding provides the happiness-and-heartbreak-filled season finale. There's lots more, such as Rory's prep-school rivalry with Paris (Liza Weil); a debutante ball; and too many pop culture references to catch in a single viewing. With such bonus delights as deleted scenes, featurettes, "Gilmore Goodies & Gossip," and a montage of the year’s best fights, this Second Season set is a 22-episode marathon waiting to happen for Gilmore fans.
