The normally quiet hamlet of Stars Hollow was in a state of disarray at the end of Gilmore Girls' fifth season: Previously perfect Rory (Alexis Bledel) had been arrested for stealing a yacht, dropped out of Yale, and moved in with her wealthy grandparents (Kelly Bishop and Edward Herrmann), causing a distraught Lorelai (Lauren Graham) to propose to diner owner Luke (Scott Patterson). Season 6 opens with Luke's reply (yes), and much of the year's episodes deal with the progress of their impending nuptials, although series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino throws obstacles in their way like a bored goddess toying with her creations -- making Season 6 the series' most controversial yet. Nearly as divisive for fans is a half-season-long fight between Rory and Lorelai that keeps mother and daughter apart. Grandmother Emily sees all of this as a way to correct the mistakes she made with Lorelai, but she soon finds out that having Rory under her roof isn't quite the bonding experience she'd hoped for. Despite the topsy-turvy state of things, Season 6 had many classic episodes featuring outstanding performances and the show's signature crackling dialogue: Friday dinners with the grandparents are reinstated in "Friday Night's All Right for Fighting," containing a wild ten-minute finish unlike anything the show has attempted before; Lane (Keiko Agena) gets married -- twice -- in "I Get a Sidekick Out of You," which also finds Lorelai spilling her guts about the state of her own engagement, to everyone but Luke; and "Partings," the season finale that has Lorelai issuing Luke an ultimatum, while Stars Hollow is overrun with musicians hoping to be the new town troubadour (including members of Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, and Sparks). The season's biggest cliffhanger, however, happened off screen: Sherman-Palladino and her co-producer husband, Daniel, announced they were leaving the series. The show continues for better or worse, but Gilmore Girls -- The Complete Sixth Season is the end of an era for one of television's best shows. Bill Pearis, Barnes & Noble
