Few television dramas allow for such a breezy, leisurely pace as the WB's mother-daughter drama Gilmore Girls, where entire episodes seem devoted solely to character development, funny tangents, and the show's patented rapid-fire dialogue. But a lot happens in the excellent third season that will find nearly every corner of Stars Hollow's perfect little world in upheaval. For Rory (Alexis Bledel), it's a season of many big choices. Will she stick with "perfect boyfriend" Dean (Jared Padalecki) or go with Jess (Milo Ventimiglia), the troubled but intelligent boy she impulsively kissed in the Season 2 finale? The love triangle finally gets resolved in "They Shoot Gilmores Don't They?" in which Rory and mom Lorelai (Lauren Graham) enter the annual Stars Hollow Dance Marathon. It's also senior year for Rory at her prep school, Chilton, and while she's dreamed of going to Harvard for years, her Yale alum grandparents (Edward Herrmann and Kelly Bishop) may have other ideas. Rory's rival at Chilton, Paris (Liza Weil), will not be making things any easier for her, either. Meanwhile Lorelai's dream of opening an inn with best friend Sookie (Melissa McCarthy) may finally come true, though not without some hardships. Those hoping for a payoff to the long-simmering relationship between Lorelai and diner owner Luke (Scott Patterson) may have to wait a while longer. Season 3's most enjoyable subplot, however, involves Rory's best friend, Lane (Keiko Agena), who joins a rock band and falls for the guitarist, Dave Rygalski (The O.C.'s Adam Brody) -- both items needing to be concealed from Lane's conservative Christian mother. Along the way to the tearful graduation-day finale, there is plenty of time for the quirky residents of Stars Hollow to further ingrain themselves in viewer's psyches. You could say that for the Gilmore Girls the third time's a charm, but charm is something this show has never lacked. Bill Pearis, Barnes & Noble
