Editorial Reviews

While it only lasted three seasons, Gilligan's Island has become known as a comedy classic, due in part to its constant rotation in syndication for more than 30 years. Almost everyone has grown up with the Castaways: the Skipper (Alan Hale, Jr.); the bumbling first mate, Gilligan (Bob Denver); the millionaire Thurston Howell III (Jim Backus) and his wife, Lovey (Natalie Schafer); the movie star Ginger (Tina Louise); the "Professor" (Russell Johnson); and the naïve farm girl Mary Ann (Dawn Wells). The Castaways began Season 2 in color for the first time -- and luckily for the two that were known as "and the rest" during Season 1 -- "The Professor and Mary Ann" were finally added to the opening theme. The 1965-66 season gets off to a typically zany start in "Gilligan's Mother-in-Law," in which a native family (with Jim Backus's real-life wife, Henny, as the mother) search for a husband -- Gilligan, of course -- for their daughter. According to Russell Johnson, creator Sherwood Schwartz's favorite episode is "The Little Dictator," wherein the exiled president of a foreign country winds up on the island, and Gilligan daydreams that he himself is a dictator. In "Smile, You're on Mars Camera," a NASA satellite with an attached camera crashes, leading the group to appeal for help, with hilarious results. "Castaways Pictures Presents" is another classic outing, as Mr. Howell directs a silent movie detailing their plight, using filmmaking equipment found on the island. The film -- set adrift and later found -- wins an anonymous award at Cannes. An accidental smack in the mouth allows Gilligan's tooth to pick up radio broadcasts of an impending typhoon in "Hi-Fi Gilligan." And in the fan favorite "Don't Bug the Mosquitoes," the Castaways perform musical numbers (the catchy "You Need Us") to coax a popular rock group to rescue them after the band lands on the island. Guest stars this season include Zsa Zsa Gabor in "Erika Tiffany Smith to the Rescue," and Bewitched's nosy neighbor Sandra Gould as a telephone operator in "You've Been Disconnected."
