September 12, 2009: Why do they hate us? It just may be because of Gilligan's Island...I don't think so!!
In a recent (Aug. 2009) interview with Dawn Wells (Mary Ann) she stated that Gilligan's Island has not been off the air since 1964 and has been aired in over 30 languages. She told of one conversation with a fan who grew up watching GI in Farsi (the language of Iran). GI is among the most and longest watched comedies internationally of all time. Why? Obviously, it's funny, but....Could it be that the entire world longs for the America seen in Gilligan's Island (innocence and with goodwill) rather than the America of the X-Files (conspiracy and government evil/cover-up)? Yet, even in Gilligan's Island the USA was atop the world and proud of it:Skipper=American military mightHowells=American capitalismProfessor=American technological superiorityGinger=American cultural influence through moviesMary Ann=American sense of beauty, who doesn't love those short/shorts?and, of course:Gilligan=American naivete and innocence, yet he's a good guy with no ill will toward anyone. And we were not resented--yet. Gilligan's Island stopped production in 1967 and has never been off the air. Apparently much of the world wants to behold the America of before 1967. Interesting. And, coincidentally, the opening shots to the program in season one were filmed on the day of the assassination of JFK (See Russell Johnson's book "Here on Gilligan's Isle). What in the world happened to America between 1963-1967? Evidently something that most of us, and many around the world, would rather forget and instead imagine us to be, even to today in reruns, as innocent as Gilligan's Island. But, alas, it ain't so!!I Also Recommend: I Dream of Jeannie - The Complete Series, Here on Gilligan's Isle, Gilligan Unbound: Pop Culture in the Age of Globalization.
