The love affair between two of Hollywood's greatest stars of the 1930s and '40s is recounted in this biopic. Clark Gable (James Brolin), the tough but quick-witted leading man often called "the King of Hollywood," meets tart-tongued comic actress Carole Lombard (Jill Clayburgh) at a party, and while the attraction between them isn't immediate (in fact they hate each other at first), as fate keeps bringing them together, they fall deeply in love. Gable is married at the time, and studio chief Louis B. Mayer (Allen Garfield) is afraid that his affair with Lombard will lead to a scandal that will destroy the career of his most valuable star, but Gable and Lombard weather the storm of negative publicity, and after Gable's wife grants him a divorce, he marries Lombard. However, their happy marriage is cut short by Lombard's tragic death as she was selling defense bonds during World War II. Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

August 16, 2004: Sometimes life is so nuts all you can do to stay sane is laugh. That's what I got out of this movie. I truly thought this was the funniest movie I've ever seen. If you aren't an ardent fan and can get past her tragic death, this is truly a hilarious movie. Highly recommend to Mel Brooks fans.

January 23, 2004: Goodness gracious! Am I really going to have to buy this on DVD? I guess so, as I am the consummate Carole Lombard fan. I caught the TV version (could this possibly have been released theatrically? oh, the humanity!) on AMC, and it was a tortured viewing, to say the least. Carole Lombard was the wittiest, warmest, funniest, earthiest, most endearing actress ever to come out of Hollywood, and Jill Clayburgh managed somehow to drain every once of loveability out of her character and leave the viewer with nothing but a sham portrayal of an annoying, shallow, humorless pain in the tuckus. The writing is painful, the staging is absurd, the acting is abominable. Somehow, a group of idiots in the 1970's took one of the greatest love stories in Hollywood (featuring two amazing personalities, a story rife with humor, interesting situations, the evocations of a golden era of cinema, fascinating supporting characters, and a truly poignant ending), and turned it into an abhorrent atrocious mess. Only for strange fans who want to see an uninterrupted desecration of their favorite actress should buy this DVD. Like I said, I will be soon.
