Many rock guitar aficionados cite Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, and Steve Vai as among the most gifted fret-handlers on Earth, and their fans got a triple treat in 1996 when these three players joined forces to tour under the moniker G3. This live concert video (recorded November 2, 1996, at Minneapolis' Northrop Auditorium) features stellar performances from each of the individual musicians, as well as a grand finale where they join forces for a trio of supercharged covers -- Freddie King's "Going Down," Frank Zappa's "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama," and Jimi Hendrix's "Red House." February 02, 2003: What a wonderful idea it was to bring these three together, and what a show they put on. Each does 20 minutes with his own band, and then they join for the last set. Satriani loves pyrotechnics, speed and experimenting to see what new sounds he can wring out of his guitar. Johnson prefers to give you a melody to listen to. He can play fast when he wants to, and you can hear every note since he doesn't use as much distortion. Vai lands right in the middle with his fusion-laced, high energy music. He doesn't go as far out as Satriani, and he plays with a lot more flash than Johnson. Kudos to Vai for letting his rhythm guitarist harmonize him note-for-note on 'The Attitude Song.' In the last set they play more like bandmates than soloists. There's no interplay between them until the last cut, a Hendrix blues. Johnson's voice is too soft and gentle for the blues, though. The DVD has a short bio of each man. You even get a pretty good light show. The only problem is that it's too short, barely over an hour. This is ideal for anyone who loves rock but hasn't heard (or heard of) these three. The low price should make the decision easier.

July 29, 2000: This video is an excellent portrayel of three very experienced guitar players. They each play 3-4 songs that will take a guitar players breath away. Towards the conclusion of this video, Joe, Eric, and Steve, present an extremely pleasant suprise. This video is a must for the guitar players arsenal.
