Editorial Reviews

It never became a ratings juggernaut like The Simpsons, but this clever sci-fi toon from Simpsons creator Matt Groening definitely deserves another look. Even after Fox canceled the show in May 2002 (cue boos and hisses), it won a posthumous Emmy, and the second season of Futurama may be its best. The writers spent much of Season 1 establishing a motley crew of alien life forms as viewer-friendly characters, from the one-eyed but big-hearted Leela to bad-boy robot Bender to Planet Express patriarch Professor Farnsworth. In Season 2, it was time to launch our 21st-century hero -- reanimated pizza delivery boy Fry -- into ever more fantastic adventures with his 31st-century pals. In a delicious Star Trek spoof, the team encounters a "Problem with Popplers." "Why Must I Be a Crustacean in Love?" sends Dr. Zoidberg back to his home planet for mating season. Elsewhere, Prof. Farnsworth rekindles romance with his mini-me clone, and Richard Nixon grafts his head onto Bender's body to run for president of the world. Worth the price of admission alone is "Xmas Story," in which John Goodman voices an eight-foot St. Nick who terrorizes naughty kids to the strains of "Santa Claus Is Gunning You Down." The set also packs plenty of behind-the-scenes goodies, including storyboards, deleted scenes, and the raw black-and-white animatics for "Crustacean." Cree McCree, Barnes & Noble
