Editorial Reviews

This cinemadaptation of John O'Hara's From the Terrace stars Paul Newman as Alfred Eaton, an unhappily married financial adviser, while his real-life wife Joanne Woodward portrays Mary St. John, his promiscuous screen spouse. Mary's libertine behavior is a by-product of her husband's inability to express love and affection, a trait he has inherited from his cold-blooded father. Mark Robson directs and Myrna Loy heads up a large supporting cast as Newman's alcoholic mother. Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

July 14, 2006: John O'Hara's popular novel here receives a fine screen treatment.Mark Robson's film benefits from a solid Ernest Lehamn script, strong direction,a beautiful production,Elmer Bernstein's lovely score, and excellent performances by a fine cast.Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are brilliant in the leading roles, but Ina Balin steals the movie in a wonderfully touching performance as Natalie. But there are two things wrong with this DVD,and that's why I gave it four stars and not five. The biggest problem is that at two hours and twenty-four minutes, the movie itself is far too long(Robson could have easily cut twenty minutes). The second thing is that Fox for some reason skimped on the special features-there's only scene selection,a few Newman-Fox trailers, and one brief newsreel. But all in all, this is a high- class soaper that delivers an evening of good entertainment.

August 13, 2004: This movie has a mix of intrigue, soap, love, revenge, and scandal - its just a great movie. Movies today could take lessons on how to tease the imagination, to stimulate the brain by working its own imagination and still maintain the character of the movie. This is when love story making was at its best.
