Editorial Reviews

Ten years after ground was broken by Freddy's razor glove at the end of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, heavyweight slasher icons Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees finally duke it out in Freddy vs. Jason. Equal parts spoof and homage, this throwback revives everything that made its titular killers famous: blood, sex, one-liners, and more blood. The story serves as an excuse for the transgression, but this has become old hat for the slasher genre. Desperately trying to get out of Hell, former child killer and dream demon Freddy (Robert Englund) devises a way to reenter the nightmares of Elm Street teens by resurrecting and controlling Jason (Ken Kirzinger) so the hockey-masked killing machine can wreak bloody havoc and put the fear of Freddy back in the locals. If this sounds convoluted or contrived, it is, with good reason: That is, to resurrect two series that were smothered in cheese by their respective ends. Watching the campy murders, the rat-a-tat references to both the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchises, and the inevitable final battle affords one the pleasure of that first juicy cheeseburger after a decade of vegan piety. It is a roller coaster of a movie, one that proves fun for diehard fans as well as those just nostalgic for the genre. The supporting teen targets -- which include Monica Keena, Jason Ritter, and Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child -- are as much window dressing as the plot. In fact, second to Freddy and Jason, director Ronny Yu is the star here. Known for the Hong Kong classic The Bride with White Hair as well as the U.S. Child's Play sequel Bride of Chucky, Yu lends a kinetic kung fu style to the proceedings that climaxes with the high-flying finale. Freddy vs. Jason ends with a wink, literally and perfectly. Tony Nigro, Barnes & Noble

A Truly Epic Showdown!by Heavy_Metal_Sushi

August 11, 2009: Before having seen this movie, I had not honestly seen the entire series of both Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street, but I had seen enough of each series to know how utterly brutal both of these horror movie icons were, and quite honestly...this movie was downright intense! Freddy Krueger attempts to regain his power by making teenagers afraid again, but can't do so without help, so enters Jason Vorjese...who is quite the teenager's bane himself. Freddy poses as Jason's mother and tells him that childen have been bad once again and need to be punished. Through this, Freddy hopes to make children/teenagers afraid again, so that he can regain his power and start terrorizing within nightmares once again. In the process of this coo, as Freddy begins to regain his power, he begins to start trying to kill within dreams again, Jason continues on a rampage, interrupting Freddy's killing, so Freddy becomes enraged and decides it's time to take Jason out of the picture, but it winds up not being as easy as Freddy would like to think, and an epic showdown ensues between the 2 of them...and both of them refuse to die. Caught in the middle of this, of course, are a handful of teenagers, who are trying to figure out how to put an end to the terror themselves. With the exception of a few minor things that slightly bothered me within the movie, which are more than overlookable, this movie was straight up one of the best slasher movie spin offs I have ever seen. Truly entertaining and intense, and not to mention a little bit of comic relief, primarily as a result of some great Freddy Krueger one liners. Overall, if you love a good epic showdown and slasher movies, or are just a big fan of Friday the 13th and/or Nigthmare on Elm Street films, definitely give this movie a watch if you have never seen it!

I Also Recommend: Halloween, Scream, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th, Part 2.
