Romantic woes dominate the 1999-2000 season of NBC’s long-running sitcom Frasier. When Daphne (Jane Leeves) gets engaged to Donny Douglas (Saul Rubinek), Frasier’s heartsick brother, Niles (David Hyde-Pierce), drums up a new girlfriend, Dr. Mel Karnofsky (Jane Adams). Most of this year’s episodes -- especially those in the second half of the season -- revolve around the preparations for Daphne’s wedding and the uncertainty both she and Niles feel where their respective partners are concerned. Other characters have their uncertainties as well. In “The Dog That Rocks the Cradle,” Frasier’s producer, Roz (Peri Gilpin), hires Bulldog (Dan Butler) to babysit her child and learns that he still harbors feelings for her. Frasier, meanwhile, briefly reunites with ex-wife Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) in 1999’s Thanksgiving show, “The Apparent Trap.” It’s to the writers’ credit that the soap-opera stuff never threatens to take over the show altogether; there are plenty of hilarious episodes in Season 7. One of the best is “Out With Dad,” in which Martin Crane (John Mahoney) is forced by circumstance to pretend that he’s gay -- on Valentine’s Day (CSI’s Marg Helgenberger guest-stars in this episode). A fellow crime series regular, Anthony La Paglia, plays Daphne’s scapegrace brother, Simon, in “Dark Side of the Moon,” another rambunctious session in the Crane home. But the year’s underlying theme reasserts itself in a season-ending two-parter in which Niles elopes with Mel as a hopelessly confused Daphne awaits her own nuptials. It’s almost fruitless to recommend one season of Frasier over another, because all of them are excellent. But this one really is memorable, and no fan should be without it. Ed Hulse
