Poised for discovery, this underappreciated 1986 Disney live-action fantasy is literally out of this world. Joey Cramer brings down-to-earth charm and genuine emotion to his role as 12-year-old David, who has the usual adolescent troubles, including an unrequited crush and an annoying little brother. One night, in 1978, while chasing his prank-playing brother through the woods, he falls and is knocked unconscious. When David comes to and returns home, he has a Twilight Zone moment, as a strange family seems to have moved in. The year, he discovers, is now 1986. He is reunited with his family, who thought he was dead (his little brother is now 18!). Where has David been for the past eight years? Why hasn't he aged? Who is the voice in his head calling to him? How is his brain able to communicate with NASA's computer? The answer lies in a crash-landed spaceship that David, with the help of robot pilot Max (voiced by Paul "Pee-Wee Herman" Rubens), will attempt to fly back to 1978. Director Randal Kleiser (Grease) channels his inner Spielberg for this E.T.-like adventure that is exciting, funny, and ultimately moving. This is a Flight well worth taking.
