Two kindred misfit spirits form an emotional bond in the Wyoming mountain wilderness in this ravishingly photographed adaptation of Mary O'Hara's resilient coming-of-age novel, the inspiration as well for 1943's My Friend Flicka and its two sequels. Alison Lohman stars here as Katy, a headstrong young woman whose heart and head are in her family's ranch, if not in her studies. After turning in a blank final exam, she is danger of having to repeat a year at her financially draining boarding school. She gets a new lease on life when she befriends a wild mustang, whom she names Flicka (it means "beautiful girl"). Straight away, she butts heads with her father (Tim McGraw, following up his memorable performance in Friday Night Lights) over her determination to train Flicka. Dad is also torn between someday turning over the ranch to his son (who confides to Katy that he doesn't like ranching and is instead opting for college) and selling the precious land to developers, much to Katy's outrage. It is up to his peacekeeper wife (Maria Bello) to state the obvious: "When are you gonna look at your daughter and realize she's you?" Flicka trots out all the clichés, but it's hard not to get swept up in the breathtaking scenery and Katy and Flicka's redemptive friendship. The PG rating is for the mildest of profanity and an intense, stormy encounter with a mountain lion. But for kids who love horse movies and parents looking for old-fashioned family entertainment, Flicka will make your heart gallop. Donald Liebenson, Barnes & Noble
