Having squandered his stint in the spotlight on hard drugs and reckless sex, washed-up Hollywood has-been Joe Scott (Daniel Craig) reflects on the summer of innocence and tragedy that would alter the course of his life after receiving news that his childhood best friend has suddenly died. As he makes his way back to the quiet English seaside village of his childhood in order to attend the funeral, he finds his journey into the past becoming a journey of both redemption and self-discovery as well. Oliver Twist star Harry Eden plays the young version of Scott in a drama also featuring Olivia Williams, Claire Forlani, and Eve. Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

April 28, 2009: As usual, Daniel Craig is brilliant in this role and the young boy playing him as a youth is also great. The story is strong with flashbacks to his youth and the circumstances that made him what he is today. Great scenary and stunning glimpses of another land. Craig at his best. Worthwhile in having in your collection of films.

Great cast but disappointing filmby Anonymous

April 20, 2009: This film has a great cast. It stars Daniel Craig (who, in addition to his other attractions, is a great actor) and a group of talented British actors who will be instantly recognizable to any fan of PBS or BBC America. The script, however, is a mess. The premise is that Craig's character, Joe Scot, is a shallow, self-absorbed movie star whose life is deteriorating into a morass of alcohol, drugs, and meaningless sex. When Joe's childhood best friend suddenly dies, he first tries to drown himself, and then travels home to Britain to face his demons. I found this premise interesting, and enjoyed Craig's acting in the beginning of the film. However, I was ultimately disappointed by the banality and confusion of the long flashback sequence. I didn't think that anything that happened to Joe's teenage self was that unusual--it's just a case of a good-looking teenage boy being seduced by a troubled older woman--and the tragedy that ensues is not only clearly not his fault, but also has no logical connection to any of his future choices. In addition, there was not enough exposition of his relationship with the best friend whose death causes his suicide attempt, or his relationship with his mother and sister. I felt cheated that such a good cast was wasted on such poor material. If you are such a rabid Daniel Craig fan that you have to watch this one, don't buy it, rent it!
