The tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table is always ripe for retelling. In this rendition, the sexy Richard Gere is Sir Lancelot, threatening to supersede the aging King Arthur (Sean Connery) by winning the love of his young wife Guinivere (Julia Ormond). This update of the age-old legend succeeds on the strength of Gere's happy-go-lucky sex appeal, Ormond's gorgeous period costuming, and Connery's unbeatable wry nobility. The script focuses on the triangle of the three principals: the older man's reluctance to relinquish his love and power to the younger man destined to supplant him; the young woman torn between her loyalty to her aged husband and her love for his rival; the young man balancing the demands of loyalty to his sovereign with the rewards of true love. This beautiful production forgoes the legend's usual elements of magic and fantasy, leaving Merlin the Magician completely out of the picture. Laura Abraham, All Movie Guide

August 05, 2008: The King Arthur legend has been done many times as a movie, and I've been willing to see several of them. I had high hopes for this one, as I love both Connery and Gere. But I was disappointed in this movie as a whole. Connery was good (not great, as he usually is) but Gere was nothing exceptional, as he usually is. Certainly it wasn't the story, as the Arthurian legend is what it is. I think it was the combination of the screenplay, the lackluster performances, and something else I haven't figured out. There are better Arthurian legend movies out there.

March 02, 2008: A lackluster, modernized version of the Medieval tale. This budget production has both uninspired settings and poor costuming, as well as a simplistic script. Lancelot is a cross between a court jester and a country bumpkin, though given his sex appeal, and youth, who would not choose him over Sean Connery's middle-aged King, dressed in blue velvet over what seems to be a surgical truss?
