Editorial Reviews

A heroic fireman locked in a failing marriage accepts his father's challenge to take part in a 40-day experiment designed to teach both husband and wife the true meaning of commitment in this faith-based marriage drama starring Kirk Cameron and Erin Bethea. When he's battling blazes, Capt. Caleb Holt (Cameron) adheres to the old firefighter's adage about never leaving your partner behind; back at home, it's an altogether different story. Caleb and his wife Catherine (Bethea) have been married for seven years, but lately arguments over career, housework, finances, and outside interests have driven the once-happy couple hopelessly apart. Just as Caleb and Catherine prepare to officially dissolve their marriage, Caleb's father John (Harris Malcolm) presents his son with a most unusual challenge: commit to a 40-day experiment called "The Love Dare," and take one last shot at saving his marriage. While at first Caleb agrees to take a chance on "The Love Dare," the discovery that it's closely tied in with his parent's newfound faith causes him to momentarily reconsider. Still, Caleb carries on with the experiment despite being constantly rejected by his skeptical, embittered wife. When Caleb asks his father how he can be expected to love someone who refuses to give him a fair chance, John tells his son that this is precisely the same love that God shows for humankind. Now, with a little help from above, the man who makes headlines for saving lives will fight to be a hero to the one person who matters most -- his wife. Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

October 15, 2009: For any couple struggling with their relationship with God and/or their spouse this movie is a must see! I was saved on February 10, 2008 and Baptized the following November - nearly a year ago. This movie depicts what every couple should be understanding and believing in. Without God in your life, you will never be able to understand life, appreciate the goodness in yourself, your spouse, and God Himself. If only more people would take the time to understand the magnitude of the message this includes...the world would be a much nicer place. God is waiting for every one of us to come to Him. What are you waiting for?

Why We Rated This Appropriate for Ages 12 and UP

What to watch out for

  • Sex:

Caleb surfs the Web for online pornography (never shown), and some dialogue hints that his wife isn't very responsive in the bedroom.

  • Violence:

An offscreen car wreck yields maimed victims; perils of an impending train crash. A firefighter rescues an unconscious child from a raging inferno, getting singed in the process.

  • Messages

  • Consumerism:

A tie-in Love Dare book exists; the movie can't help but feel a bit like a promo for it.

  • Drugs:

In one scene, firemen drink hot sauce to test their machismo. In real life, a stunt like that recently killed a man.

  • Language:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Fireproof

Parents need to know that a powerful grassroots marketing campaign has helped turn this Christian-themed indie drama about a fireman with a troubled marriage into a hit. While the content is age-appropriate for older tweens and up, the marriage-centric story isn't likely to interest them. The plot includes mention of online porn (it's frowned on, of course), but viewers don't really see anything salacious. Marriage is portrayed as tough and often devoid of love, affection, or respect, but something that Christians are expected to endure anyway. Non-Christian viewers might be uncomfortable with some of the movie's dialogue and themes; on the flipside, at least it skips some of the raw language and sex in other Hollywood firefighting movies (like Backdraft).

Families Can Talk About

Families can talk about the film's messages about marriage. Talk about the concept of "unconditional love" -- what exactly does that mean? How do different groups (religious or otherwise) feel about divorce? Do you have to be a Christian to understand or appreciate what this movie is saying about marriage and life in general?
