Editorial Reviews

Enter the perfect family life of a General Insurance agent Jim Anderson in Father Knows Best. Jim (Robert Young) would come home from his office, take off his sports jacket, put on his comfortable sweater, and deal with the everyday problems of a growing family without breaking a sweat. His picture perfect wife Margaret (Jane Wyatt) is a vibrant mother of three - Betty (Elinor Donahue), Bud (Bill Gray), and Kathy (Lauren Chapin). Father Knows Best? first premiered as a NBC radio sitcom in 1949. The series star Robert Young and producer Eugene B. Rodney transplanted the popular radio series into CBS TV show (minus the question mark in the show's title) in October 1954, and it has been part of the American cultural fabric ever since -- an iconic representation of mid-century family values. This Father Knows Best - Season 1 release features all 26 episodes plus the never-before-seen episode "24 Hours in Tyrantland," which was created for the U.S. government in 1959, plus exclusive DVD features with all-new revealing interviews, Robert Young's Home Movies, rare "behind-the-scenes" color footage, the pilot episode of Robert Young's very next TV series "Window On Main Street" and much more! August 13, 2008: The kids in this were really fantastic actors, especially Elinor Donahue and Billy Gray. This now hard-to-find series was once a staple of after school tv viewing...Despite its reputation as 'plastic' and 'unrealistic', watching this again reminded me that the kids on the show were not perfect angels, and that Father himself is quite often wrong. Yes, it is all squeaky clean, and represents an ideal that probably never existed...and yet, it still entertains. The episodes are a mix of syndication prints, and also full length episodes with their original sponsor openings...seems like whatever Shout Factory could find, they used. Most interesting of all is the 'Tyrantland' episode created for schools and churches...pure propaganda, but fascinating.
