In this epic Ron Howard film, Joseph Donelly (Tom Cruise) is an impoverished 19th-century Irish tenant farmer who has recently lost both his father and his home to the agents of his unscrupulous landlord. On a mission to avenge his family's injustice at the hands of the ruthless land baron Joseph meets the landlord's daughter and the two run off to America together where the girl expects to claim a piece of land for herself in the Oklahoma Land Rush. After she is robbed on the boat that carries them to America, they arrive with nary a penny and struggle just to keep their heads above water in the slums of Boston. After a series of serious set-backs they do eventually work their way out West, where Joseph must fight to realize his dream and claim a piece of the American Dream for himself -- and where they finally acknowledge their love for each other. Shot in wide-screen Panavision, the movie was filmed on-location in Ireland and Montana. Iotis Erlewine, All Movie Guide

You are never too "far and away" from life!by mareatthemovies1

April 03, 2009: This film is excellent. I cannot figure out film critics - they don't understand that the audience is looking for "entertainment", not "messages" all the time! But beside "that" point. This film about the Irish coming to America in the late 1800's and settling down in

Oklahoma is "grand". Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman are perfect as Joseph and Shannon. There is a "STORY" being "told" in this film!!!

It's about the courage it takes to pursue your dreams of owning your own

"home"(being in America) and doing what you can to fulfill that dream. Love plays a big part in this story. "lOVE" is the "thread" that pulls people together. And in working together, men and women can achieve their ultimate goal(whatever it is) in their lives.!!!

Many comments have been made about Tom Cruise as a person. I personally believe Tom is doing the best that he can with his life. And Nicole is finally happy herself. Let these two young people keep doing what they were meant to do - and that is to keep us(as an audience) highly "entertained", in these difficult economic times!!!

    Love it!by Anonymous

Nicole Kidman, as usual was wonderful and beautiful, feisty and i loved it. The movie was really touching and It made me laugh and cry. I would truly recommend it.
