Editorial Reviews

It may lack the cultural-landmark status of The Simpsons or the gross-out slacker cachet of South Park, but Seth MacFarlane's Family Guy is truly a gem among TV’s animated prime-time series, an often hilarious outing that enjoyed an unjustly short (1999-2001) network run. The series about the Quahog, Rhode Island, Griffins -- beer-swilling dad Peter, put-upon mom Lois, teens Meg and Chris, baby Stewie, and family pooch Brian -- obviously found some inspiration in Matt Groening's Springfield. Yet The Family Guy manages to up the ante on irreverence, sinking its teeth into targets ranging from Big Tobacco to tainted elections. The show's power lies in its eclectic ensemble cast -- with the voice and maniacal demeanor of a 007 villain, enfant terrible Stewie is a wondrous creation, a chatty genius baby bent on world domination yet frustrated by the limits facing any one-year-old. But the breakout character is Brian -- a canine who talks, smokes, and drinks like a member of the Rat Pack. The pooch is the linchpin of such bizarrely brilliant episodes as "Brian Does Hollywood," in which, as a struggling screenwriter, he is sucked into the porn industry with adult guests Ron Jeremy and Jenna Jamison. Like The Simpsons, Family Guy shines brightest when its metaphors are stretched to their limit. Take "E. Peterbus," wherein Peter forms his own country of Petoria and, after he invades his neighbor's pool and incurs the U.N.'s wrath, finds the U.S. Army at his border. In the wrong hands, this could have been an experiment in poor taste. In MacFarlane's deft hands, it's merely delicious. Peter Marchand, Barnes & Noble

All the old RVA classics!by BillyJacksonLee

January 19, 2009: Heres to the good old days! This review is written one day before a new era in politics, an era long hoped for by Reidsville Adventures overlord Al Ralphingmree. But reading the old RVA commentary regarding issues affecting the early '80s additionally makes one nostalgic for the days before there were Wallmarts and McMansions. Everything is done just right, with Axen as the left-wing voice of reason, Jebbinghouse perfectly bigoted as ever, Jade the typical mall rat, and Ackson the black quarterback who enjoys popularity but refuses to act snobby. The political commentary is just perfect; after the outcome of the 1984 election strips were run mocking both Reagan and Mondale. And the Focus on the Family parody is a classic. Easily recommended for anybody who likes politics, or just relationship comics.

I Also Recommend: Family Guy, Vol. 2 - Season 3, Got War? (Doonesbury Series), Doonesbury: The War Years: Peace out, Dawg! and Got War?.

December 02, 2008: When this series first came out I didn't like it at all. I found it crass & just pointless. After watching the whole first season I realised that it was the sick kind of humor that I like. Cutting edge & new presented in cartoon form. Brilliant! You really have to wonder what the station was thining when it opted to cancel the show not once but twice! Now Mcfarlane is top of the class. I would recommend this series to anyone looking for a great horse laugh.
