A forerunner in accidental-family subgenre of situation comedies, Family Affair cast veteran actor Brian Keith as Bill Davis, a successful engineer, world traveler, and bachelor who loses his brother and sister-in-law in an accident. In an instant, be becomes father to their three children -- 15-year-old Cissy (Kathy Garver) and 6-year-old twins Jody (Johnny Whitaker) and Buffy (Anissa Jones) -- as well as Buffy's doll, the iconic Mrs. Beasley. Equally iconic is Sebastian Cabot in the role of Davis's fussy butler, Mr. (Giles) French, who now has to care for three kids in addition to his employer. While resistant at first, both Davis and French eventually come to adore the children and form a tight-knit family. TV trivia fans will note that this first season includes John Williams's nine-episode run substituting as Mr. (Nigel) French, filling in for his brother Giles as butler -- an expedient necessitated by Cabot's sudden, temporary illness. Remembered mainly as a sweet-natured diversion that lived up to its name, Family Affair also dealt, on occasion, with the children's longing for their lost parents. The first of the 30 episodes included in this Season 1 set debuted September 12, 1966, on CBS, in the Monday night slot after The Andy Griffith Show. It proved a hit straightaway, ranking among that year's top 20 shows. This five-disc set includes a production stills gallery as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the show with the adult Garver.
