Editorial Reviews

This handsome, swashbuckling star of Hollywood's Golden Age is seen at his best in the five classic Warner Bros. movies collected in this deluxe box set. Captain Blood (1935), Errol Flynn's first starring vehicle, is a lavish adaptation of Rafael Sabatini's bestselling novel about an Irish physician who is sold into slavery and later forced into piracy. Teeming with action, it became the template for his other seafaring sagas. The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939) cast Flynn opposite Warner's top dramatic star, Bette Davis, who is nearly unrecognizable in heavy makeup as the tempestuous British queen not-so-secretly smitten with Flynn's dashing nobleman. In Dodge City (1939), his first western, Flynn plays an Australian cattleman who reluctantly accepts the job of cleaning up the lawless cow town. In addition to serving as the primary structural inspiration for Mel Brooks's Blazing Saddles, Dodge City offers the wildest barroom brawl ever committed to celluloid. The Sea Hawk (1940), another Sabatini adaptation, strays far from its literary source but delivers plenty of thrills, action, and romance in the Captain Blood tradition. The historical record takes quite a beating in They Died with Their Boots On (1941), a fanciful but extravagant biographical film that casts Flynn as General George Armstrong Custer. Fellow Warner Bros. star and future president Ronald Reagan has a substantial supporting role in this Wild West saga. Finally, and only available in this box set, is the newly produced documentary The Adventures of Errol Flynn,a chronicle of the Tasmanian-born star's life, with scenes from his movies, candid footage and photographs, and interviews with historians and co-workers. Given that Flynn was reputedly even more of a charismatic, adventurous rogue off the screen than on, it's a wild tale in itself. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble

May 26, 2005: This is a must have collection for those fans of movies of the 1930's and 40's. Next to Clark Gable(The King), Errol Flynn is the most dashing and handsome star that ever graced the silver screen, in a era that had many , many canidates(i.e Tyrone Power).
