Billed as the first martial arts film produced by a Hollywood studio, Enter the Dragon was a star vehicle for the legendary Bruce Lee. Tragically, Lee died under mysterious circumstances a month before its release, ending any hopes that this tour de force would catapult his popularity to another level. The story is straightforward: Lee (his character referred to only as Mr. Lee) travels to a martial arts tournament on the private island of a reclusive Bond film-esque crime mastermind, Mr. Han (Kien Shih). He has two goals: to shut down Mr. Han's opium operation and to avenge the murder of his sister. Cast with a number of martial arts experts, including karate champion Jim Kelly (who along with actor John Saxon flank the Asian hero with a black and a white costar), the gadget-free Enter the Dragon now seems an exercise in action-film classicism. Lee's fighting form is clean and pure, and he uses violence only as a last resort. A funky Lalo Schifrin score (with occasional Asian inflections) and Kelly's huge Afro set the film unmistakably in the early '70s, but the famous sequence that pits Lee against Han in a room of mirrors is timeless, inspired cinema.
