    Editorial Reviews

Jim Henson’s puppet wizardry conjures up Frogtown Hollow, a pastoral Wind in the Willows-esque setting for Russell and Lillian Hoban’s Christmas-themed story of faith, sacrifice, and love. Emmet Otter and his widowed mother barely support themselves doing odd jobs, and the $50 grand prize offered in an upcoming holiday talent contest would afford each the opportunity to get the other an extravagant present. Readers of O. Henry’s "Gift of the Magi" can guess where this is heading, but Emmet Otter does manage a few surprises en route to its heartwarming conclusion. Paul Williams’s musical score is "otterly" delightful, and the visible strings supporting the all-puppet cast add their own retro charm. This DVD contains a segment about the making of Emmet Otter, the restoration of a lost song, and an amusing bloopers-and-outtakes section. Even without Kermit the Frog's original opening and closing appearances (seemingly a victim of pesky rights issues), Emmet Otter will, to quote one character, "leave you feeling pretty good." February 16, 2009: My mother (in her 70's) asked me to locate this after viewing with a group. She was sure I wouldn't find it, but there it was at Barnes & Noble after trying at least 4 other retailers. She has watched and enoyed it several times with grandchildren and by herself. The characters are very entertaining and Jim Henson's creativity is a marvel. A great tradition for holiday time and just plain fun any time.

Best Christmas Movie of All Timeby kalitaylor

February 12, 2009: Last Christmas, a friend sent me an email survey with questions about the holiday season and one of the questions was about what I thought was the best Christmas movie. I had to think about all the movies I had seen and my mind went back to when I was a kid. I smiled when I thought of this movie. I answered with this one and went right to B&N and bought this copy to re-see it. Better yet to know that there are no kids in the house to see it with. It is just plain fun. :-)
