After being completely retooled at Ellen DeGeneres's request, These Friends of Mine was renamed Ellen for its second year, and new cast members were added who would remain throughout the series' run. Ellen Morgan's best buddy and roommate, Adam Green (Arye Gross), was the only major first-season character to survive the show's facelift as Season 2 began in September 1994. These Friends... recurring character Joe Farrell (David Anthony Higgins) gets a permanent spot on the show's roster as a cantankerous co-worker of Ellen's at the bookstore. Joely Fisher is introduced as Paige Clark -- without a mention of what happened to previous friends Holly (Holly Fulger) or Anita (Maggie Wheeler) -- in the season opener, "The Dentist." This hilarious outing has Ellen getting a dose of gas during a dental procedure. Other great episodes include: "The Fix-Up," in which guest star Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) plays a blind date Ellen remembers as a weirdo; "So Funny," with Kathy Najimy portraying a friend of Adam's whose sense of humor makes Ellen jealous; "Adam's Birthday," in which Adam moves out and Ellen gets excited over the possibilities of decorating; and the year’s best episode, "The Spa," in which Ellen and Paige try to relax -- with hilarious results -- at a day spa. Keep an eye out for other recognizable faces that drop by this season, such as Spinal Tap's Harry Shearer; Joely Fisher's mother, Connie Stevens; Seinfeld's Patrick Warburton; and Law & Order: SVU star Dann Florek.
