Before she became the darling of the daytime talk show world, stand-up comedian Ellen DeGeneres launched her television career with the ABC sitcom These Friends of Mine, later renamed Ellen in its second year. DeGeneres stars as neurotic bookstore employee Ellen Morgan, whose quirky personality and nonstop babbling often get her into sitcom-style trouble. Friends Adam (Arye Gross), Anita (Maggie Wheeler, recognizable from her role as Janice in Friends), and Holly (Holly Fulger) all put up with Ellen and her escapades. In addition to the original 11 episodes, this Season 1 collection also includes the episodes "The Tape," and "The Mugging," which aired out of order during Season 3. In this and the next two seasons -- before Ellen Morgan came out of the closet in season 4 -- the show featured her routinely dating and losing a succession of boyfriends. In "A Kiss Is Still a Kiss," Ellen answers a personal ad and meets the man of her dreams, only to discover he's a horrible kisser; romance blossoms between Ellen and a former high school hunk in "The Class Reunion"; and she dates a much younger man (Six Feet Under's Peter Krause) in "The Hand That Robs the Cradle." The series pilot introduces Ellen's endearing quirkiness by having her return to the DMV again and again to get the perfect photo for her driver's license. Other highlights include Ellen and Adam's hysterical hunt for the perfect fridge in "The Refrigerator" and the arrival of Ellen's overbearing mother, Lois (Alice Hirson), in "The Promotion." Although These Friends of Mine ranked 13th in the Nielsen ratings for its first year, a retooling took place by the end of the season; the weaker characters of Wheeler and Fulger were eliminated, allowing eventual series regular David Anthony Higgins to shine as bookstore manager Joe.
