Since the early 1970s, Jeff Lynne has given listeners some of the biggest, most ear-opening orchestral sounds in popular music, and his recent Zoom album is no exception. Shot in May of 2001 at CBS's Los Angeles studios, this concert was the kickoff to Electric Light Orchestra's prematurely aborted Zoom tour. What's notable here is that Lynne and company were supporting a superb album, one that doesn't give off comeback vibes so much as deliver lush, intricate, accomplished rock. Highlights like "Just For Love" and "Ordinary Dream" show that Lynne hasn't given any ground in his melodic mastery. Playing on their trademark "space-ship" stage, Lynne's eight-piece ensemble is pretty much on fire, miraculously capturing the sweet classical-cosmic flavor of ELO's hits.
