Hard to believe, but there actually was a time when George Clooney was not a household name. That changed abruptly in 1994, when ER debuted and turned the messy life-and-death realities of a fictional Chicago hospital into the most-watched drama of the decade. The groundbreaking first season redefined the medical genre with raw emotions and staccato cuts that heightened the harrowing action. Part of the show's initial draw was sheer star power; besides Clooney, the original cast included Anthony Edwards, Julia Margulies, and Eriq LaSalle, along with A-list guest stars from Ving Rhames to Quentin Tarantino (who also directed an episode). But what really hooked viewers was ER's unflinching look at what makes people tick, from the patients on the operating table to the surgeons wielding the defibrillators. Beginning with the pilot, in which Clooney's Dr. Doug Ross comes to work drunk, the 25 episodes archived here expose the characters' flaws like an X-ray machine. Some are all-time classics like "Blizzard," in which the victims of a 32-car crash descend en masse on the harried staff. The Emmy-winning "Love's Labor Lost" has been enshrined by TV Guide as one of the greatest shows of all time. Learn how the crew shot this nail-biter on the DVD, which boasts a bevy of extra features: commentary tracks, two making-of documentaries, and featurettes and outtakes -- a menu as classy as the show itself. Cree McCree, Barnes & Noble

Graphic and bloody injuries. Patients are often outraged, psych patients throw temper tantrums, drug fits, doctors have been held at gunpoint and murdered in the ER.
Drugs and alcohol addictions with doctors and patients; smoking.
Rarely, four-letter words are used -- often toward doctors from angry patients. Also words like "tits," "hell," "bitch," "a--hole," etc.
Occasionally doctors hook up or we see "the morning after."
Not an issue.
About ER - Season 1
Parents need to know that this show is not for young audiences. It's an intense medical drama with graphic situations (lots of blood and surgeries) and mature storylines. Death, disease, and physical injuries are a part of each episode. Rape, neglect, physical abuse, spousal abuse, teen pregnancy, abortion, and incest have all been plots involving young kids and teens. Some patients have serious psychological ailments. The sexual relationships between doctors are often at the center of the drama. Parents will want to watch with their teens and be prepared for a follow-up conversation. Parents also should know that the program repeats on TNT during the late morning hours, so be aware that kids who are home from school may be tuning in. If you allow your teen to watch, make sure s/he is comfortable seeing gross visuals of blood and surgeries.
Families can talk about whether or not they think the situations presented on the show are realistic. How do the doctors cope with their highly stressful jobs, make tough decisions, and deal with life-and-death situations?
