James Wong adapts the rich mythos of the Dragonball series that grew from a manga into various popular animated series with this 20th Century Fox production starring Justin Chatwin. The plot revolves around Goku (Chatwin), Earth's greatest champion, who must defend the planet against an invading race of alien warriors hell-bent on dominating the universe. Wong directs from his own script, with Kung Fu Hustle's Stephen Chow producing. Buffy the Vampire Slayer's James Marsters co-stars as the film's villain, Piccolo, with Jamie Chung playing Chi Chi and Emmy Rossum portraying Bulma. Hong Kong legend Chow Yun-Fat rounds out the cast as Master Roshi, Goku's mentor in the film. Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide

August 06, 2009: I really enjoyed this film! It could possibly be because I was just so excited they actually made a live-action DB movie, but I thought it was really good! It was fast paced, but you got the gist of what they were trying to show. I thought the actor that played Goku did a good job when it came to his personality when he was younger. Bulma was pretty amusing too. I think it was good that they didn't do a super literal interpretation on her character and gave her just a strand of blue instead of a full head of blue hair. They prolly should have picked a younger looking actor for Yamucha though. Either way, I think this is going to be another one of those movies that I watch all the time. I hope that they do another one soon!

July 28, 2009: This movie was honestly not as bad as everyone says it is. As a Dragonball fan, I found plenty of "in" references for fans and enjoyed watching it. However, this is definitely just a popcorn flick, nothing groundbreaking here.

The movie was fast paced, and the performances were all very enjoyable with plenty of humor and action interjected to make sure we aren't bogged down with substandard plot and scripting.

Sure, this is a very watered down, mainstreamed version of Dragonball, but if you can get over the fact that this isn't the greatest movie of all time, just a popcorn flick, then you will be fine.
