July 29, 2009: I watched this with my friends, some of whom have only seen the Ninth and Tenth Doctors. They all agreed Patrick Troughton was terrific as the Second Doctor and Frazer Hines was great as the highlander Jamie MacCrimmon. We laughed at some of the set designs, but remembered they were futuristic for the time this was made in the early to mid 60's on television. Some of the lines were giggle worthy, such as a mention of the "Master of Fiction"'s previous work "The Adventures of Captain Jack Harkaway", being there's a companion for the Ninth and Tenth Doctors called Captain Jack Harkness.

The Behind-the-scenes featurettes were well-thought out, such as the information on Frazer Hines and the brief segment with the puppet and the Yeti. Overall, great to watch and interesting to see how things were.

September 06, 2008: Well, I enjoyed it, just to get that out of the way first! Now I'll continue by saying that this is pretty much the quintessential episode of the 2nd Doctor vintage. The sets are spare enough in some scenes to make Star Trek and Lost in Space seem epic in comparison. But this show never talks down to you! The actors do a great job of making their surroundings, their enemies, and their trials seem real and urgent. Even when Lancelot is fighting Blackbeard. Don't ask, just watch. And don't confuse the Master with THE Master. I made that mistake, and suffered for it in explaining the episode to some more zealous fans. This show is about tradition, over everything else. Not in terms of values, but in honoring its origins with every update. Keep that in mind as you watch the older, black and white episodes - the sound the TARDIS makes when it's gearing up for a jump, and the soundtrack itself! The cleverness of the Doctor, how he utilizes and inspires his assistants and companions - these are the traditions of Doctor Who. Enjoy! And understand that not all Scots wear kilts all the time.
