Editorial Reviews

The three DVDs in this limited edition boxed set contain all four episodes of the digitally remastered fourteen-part Doctor Who immortal adventure, "The Trial of the Time Lord," starring Colin Baker as the Doctor.

Volume 1: "The Mysterious Planet" - The saga begins when the Tardis is drawn into mammoth space station. The Doctor emerges alone to face a tribunal of the Time Lords, and placed on trial for cosmic interference. The trial beings with a screening of the Doctor arriving on Ravalox.
Volume 2: "Mindwarp" - The cosmic prosecutor, Valeyard, builds his case against Doctor Who, with evidence recorded in the Matrix and through the Tardis. The Doctor's most recent adventure is introduced as evidence of his guilt.
Volume 3: "Terror of the Vervoids, The Ultimate Foe" - Doctor Who presents his case, a story from his near future that occurs after he has met a new companion, Melanie. Finally, in "The Ultimate Foe," the truth is revealed. From the Studio

The Verdictby AllynS

August 06, 2009: Probably the most thorough and enlightening Doctor Who DVD released so far. This set encompasses an entire season (the 23rd, 1986) of the Classic series, at a time when the show was at it most turbulent behind the scenes. This set not only presents the season as aired in pristine quality, but serves up an amazing array of extra features that looks at the whole story behind the production -- the good and the bad. Seen possibly for the first time in full context, this set sheds a whole new light on one the most misunderstood seasons of the show.

What we get is a solid story arc, with three stand-alone adventures presented as evidence in the Doctor's trial, with a fourth installment set in the Matrix wrapping up the story threads. While admittedly not the best effort of the Classic series (the documentaries reveal the turmoil going on in the production office that contributed to this) , but not nearly as bad as its reputation -- it actually proves to be a very enjoyable romp with some fine performances by Colin Baker (the Doctor), Michael Jaysted (the Valeyard), Lynda Bellingham (the Inquisitor), Tony Selby (Glitz) and Nabil Shaban (Sil) in particular.

I highly recommend this set, not only for the enjoyable story being told on screen, but for the unparalleled look at the drama unfolding behind the scenes as well.

I Also Recommend: Doctor Who: Robots of Death, Doctor Who: the Tomb of Cybermen, Doctor Who: The Two Doctors - Episode 141.
