Beginning the Long Voyageby MrsHarkness

July 05, 2009: The very first Doctor Who adventures were filmed on a less-than-a-shoestring budget back in 1963. Regardless, the boundless creativity of the show's creators and the charm of William Hartnell as the first Doctor is what makes the show such a winner. The "Beginning Collection" is limited to a few famous story arcs (the first appearance of the infamous Daleks, in particular), all of which are classics. These are the journeys that set the TARDIS in motion for 45 years and counting.

Brilliant.

May 05, 2009: The early episodes of Dr. Who probably won't excite people who don't like the show already, but for those who do, they're great. Particularly fun for me are the inclusion of both versions of the pilot episode, the realization that the Doctor's greatest enemy (or at least one of the greatest) showed up in the second story the show told, and the avant garde theatricality of the third story. Not only are the stories interesting in their own right (and here I'm speaking about the show as a whole, down through the decades); they also provide a continuous document of the development of science fiction television and storytelling ideas in the UK.
