Editorial Reviews

If you could talk to the child that you used to be, what advice would you give him? That question forms the basis of this comic fantasy. Forty-year-old Russ Duritz (Bruce Willis) is a wealthy and powerful "image consultant" who has made a career out of telling people how to present themselves. But while he's a success in business, he's a failure in life; he's vain, mean-spirited, and hasn't been able to hold onto a marriage (or even a pet dog). One day, Russ is startled to meet Rusty (Spencer Breslin), a stocky kid whom he soon realizes is himself at the age of eight, having passed through a wrinkle in time. Young Rusty doesn't seem much happier than the grown-up Russ, so the older man takes his younger self under his wing and tries to teach him how to avoid the mistakes he's made, while Rusty encourages Russ to be a more caring human being. Along the way, Russ and Rusty become friends, and realize how much they can learn from each other. Disney's The Kid also stars Jean Smart as one of Russ' clients, Lily Tomlin as his assistant, and Daniel Von Bargen as his father. Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

November 11, 2009: This movie, entitled "The Kid", is not made for kids. It's not dirty or inappropriate (in fact, it's cleaner than most cartoons out there). This is like a modern-day It's A Wonderful Life. Go into it with that, and just soak it all up. A movie like this only comes around about once a decade, so get out of it what you can and learn from it. I highly recommend anything else by this director as well.

December 29, 2005: If each of us had the opportunity to fully sort out the impact of a single incident on our lives and futures, what a different place this world could be! The chance to no longer have the hidden and insidious effects doing their damage on our current lives because these went uninspected and unconfronted. Russ Duritz was really lucky to sort out his current situation in life by confronting the incident where his dad basically accuses him at age 8 of hastening his mother's death and telling him not to cry. What devastation that wreaked on his life! And he never saw it. To relive that at age 40 and remove the harmful effects of that incident and to be able to move on and be the person he'd always wanted to be -- now that is priceless (and a bit like what Dianetics can help someone to accomplish)!
