If the filmmakers featured in the first Director's Label box set -- Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, and Chris Cunningham -- are the envelope pushers, this second set brings out the big guns, makers of some of the most familiar pop-culture imagery of the past few decades. Anton Corbijn, who is probably as well known as a rock photographer, has been making videos since nearly the beginning of the medium. While his almost exclusively black-and-white work with Echo & the Bunnymen, U2, and Depeche Mode helped define both Corbijn and those bands in the '80s, it's the oversaturated color -- colorized from black-and-white, actually -- he used in Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box" video for which he may be best known. Other classic Corbijn clips featured here are the Rollins Band's "Liar," the spaghetti-western fantasy that is Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus," and Joy Division's haunting "Atmosphere." Stéphane Sednaoui also got his start in photography, although filmmaking remained his first love. After directing a couple of videos for French rappers NTM (one of which, "Le Monde de Demain," is included here), he hit MTV pay dirt with the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 1991 breakthrough, "Give It Away." There is no doubt that the striking clip, featuring the band members painted silver in the middle of the desert, was fundamental in launching the Chili Peppers as one of the 90s' most successful bands. With that, only his fourth job, Sednaoui became the hottest director of the time, and he went on to create such memorable clips as Björk's "Big Time Sensuality" (which had her dancing around Manhattan on the back of a flatbed truck), U2's Moroccan-shot "Mysterious Ways," and Alanis Morissette's "Ironic." Undoubtably the most successful of the four filmmakers featured in this second Director's Label set is Mark Romanek, whose unique combination of creative sensibility and commercial savvy has resulted in an astounding resume: There's the monkey on a crucifix and palpable decay of Nine Inch Nails' "Closer"; Fiona Apple's seamy, sexy "Criminal," which plays like party Polaroids come to life; Michael and Janet Jackson's Kubrick-inspired "Scream"; the Midnight Cowboy-meets-Truffaut clip for Beck's "Devil's Haircut." Remarkably, Romanek's hit list goes on, from the visceral bravura of Jay-Z's "99 Problems" to the frail, heartbreaking video for Johnny Cash's "Hurt." The Director's Label set concludes with Jonathan Glazer, who hasn't achieved as much commercial success as the other three but may be the biggest talent of them all. His best-known video by far is Jamiroquai's "Virtual Insanity," an unforgettable, how'd-they-do-that clip featuring a couch as singer Jay Kay's dance partner. Equally impressive are Glazer's lesser-seen videos for UNKLE's "Rabbit in Your Headlights," Radiohead's "Karma Police" and "Street Spirit," Blur's "The Universal," and Nick Cave's "Into My Arms." Also included on Glazer's disc are many of his award-winning television commercials (the Guinness ad, "Surfer," is a knockout) and clips from his two feature films -- Sexy Beast and Birth. All four discs feature commentary from the artists and directors, 56-page books with interviews and exclusive art, and more. The Director's Label series is truly using DVD as a new medium, and as much as there is to digest here, their third set is already eagerly anticipated. Bill Pearis, Barnes & Noble
