Editorial Reviews

A boy and a dinosaur join forces to bring peace to their village in this animated feature inspired by the popular television miniseries Dinotopia. Kex (voice of Alec Medlock) is a 12-year-old boy who, after the sinking of the ship he's boarded, is stranded on an uncharted island. To his surprise, Kex finds himself in a land called Dinotopia, where dinosaurs have not only survived and developed the ability to speak, they've learned to live in harmony with human beings. Kex is befriended by a young dinosaur named 26 (voice of Alyssa Milano), who teaches him about life on the island, but when the powerful Ruby Sunstone is stolen by Ogthar (voice of Malcolm McDowell), a notorious villain on the island, both the young boy and his reptilian pal find themselves in great danger. Dinotopia: Quest for the Ruby Sunstone also features the voice talents of Jamie Kennedy, Kathy Griffin, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Diedrich Bader. Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

May 20, 2005: Being more familiar with the Dinotopia miniseries (which I own on DVD) than the books (which my sister owns), I rented this film out of curiosity. The result was absolutely stupid. Some teenage orphan newcomer and a preteen sounding 26 with Samantha Micelli's voice journey to stop Malcolm McDowell from taking over Dinotopia atop some Mount Doom kind of thingy with a Ruby Sunstone being the key to all this. The whole thing started whuzzah, then got absolutely goofy once the kid arrived on Dinotopia (the aforementioned preteen 26, ancient Con Ed diggers, and even a dated jab at Michael Flatley), and then Jamie Kennedy comes on with his annoying newborn dinosaur and the whole thing goes down the toilet like Evillene. Kennedy is so godawful and annoying, you could swear he was a dino Ark of the Covenant, melting the skin off your face with his "comedy". HE'S THAT BAD, FOLKS. And yet, despite all this, I still liked it better than the Dragonheart sequel. Still, this is the most ridiculous movie ever made, and remember, I saw Can't Stop the Music.
