Editorial Reviews

When Mary Tyler Moore had to decide when to end her own classic series, no doubt she took inspiration from The Dick Van Dyke Show, which, after five years, went out pretty much at the top of its game (some unfortunate hairstyles notwithstanding). Series creator Carl Reiner and company saved some of the best episodes for last, beginning with the classic "Coast to Coast Big Mouth," in which Laura inadvertently reveals on national television that Alan Brady is bald. The Dick Van Dyke Show was groundbreaking in its use of flashback episodes to further flesh out its iconic characters. Of the four Season 5 episodes to employ the device, the best are "No Rice at My Wedding," in which a handsome soldier wins Laura in a raffle, and "Remember the Alimony," which recalls Rob and Laura's disastrous honeymoon. The show's writers were particularly generous this season, providing ensemble members Morey Amsterdam, Richard Deacon, and Rose Marie with some of their finest half hours. Especially touching is "Buddy Sorrell, Man and Boy," in which "the human joke machine" prepares for his bar mitzvah (certainly a prime-time first). In "From the Bottom of Mel Cooley's Heart," put-upon producer Mel Cooley at last stands up to the abusive Alan. "Dear Sally Rogers," meanwhile, finds the lovelorn comedy writer advertising for a husband on a late-night talk show. Even Larry Matthews's Richie enjoys one of his best episodes, "Go Tell the Birds and the Bees," in which the boy takes it upon himself to educate his classmates about the facts of life. "Odd but True" is an uncharacteristically twisted episode. Several episodes get a considerable lift from the guest stars, including Billy De Wolfe as a snooty dog groomer in "The Ugliest Dog in the World," Wally Cox as candidate Rob's city council opponent, and Godfrey Cambridge as an agent forced to use the Petrie house for a stakeout. The Dick Van Dyke Show did what the recent ill-conceived reunion show could not: leave the audience wanting more, which this five-disc set provides with a wealth of archival extras, including interviews, audio commentaries, and the cast reunion at the 1992 Comic Relief benefit. February 10, 2009: It's good to see and hear witty comedy performed so well by the great stars of the past. No matter how many times I watch the Petries and the rest of the gang, I laugh and enjoy every minute.

January 19, 2005: Some of the best episodes of the entire series are in season 5. It is a must have by itself or to complete the series. The episodes are clear and uncut. Unfortunately, TVLand has cut out some good parts of these episodes. There are also wonderful extras including commentary and clips of shows that haven't been shown in over 30 years. I have not been disappointed with this entire series. The acting and writing were absolutely superb. 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' was the first sophisticated situation comedy. I would loved to have been sitting in the Petrie's living room during a hip party or bridge night. The chemistry was wonderful and this show never grows old.
